Asda announces carrier bag changes

April 6th, 2008

Supermarket giant Asda is to remove its single-use carrier bags from its checkouts in the coming months.

Following news last week that Marks and Spencer is to begin charging customers for use of its plastic bags, Asda is to try and reduce the amount of bags customers use.

While Marks and Spencer will be charging 5p per bag, Asda has decided to put carrier bags underneath the till, forcing customers to ask the checkout clerk for a bag if they need it.

Andy Clarke, retail director for Asda, explained the company’s reasoning behind the decision.

“We want to make protecting the planet easier and more affordable for our 15 million customers and we believe this is the best way to encourage shoppers to change the habit of a life time and start reusing their bags instead,” he said.

During the trial of the scheme – which is set to start in June – plastic bag use was reduced by 20 per cent.
