Arsenic rice warning

April 14th, 2008

There are dangerous levels of arsenic found in rice stocked on UK supermarket shelves, one health expert has claimed.

According to Professor Andrew Meharg of Aberdeen University, China – a big consumer of rice – would class the levels as damaging to one’s health, the Daily Telegraph reports.

However, China has the most severe restrictions of arsenic levels in food.

Professor Meharg stated that in total a third of baby rice tested by the Food Standards Agency as high levels of arsenic.

“The majority of babyfood has relatively high levels of arsenic – the top end of the range. This is potentially harmful because they have small bodies and so it is a large proportion of rice – rice pudding, rice crackers and powdered rice,” he stated.

There is no set standard for arsenic levels by the European Union.

Food from the US, France, Italy and Bangladesh were all found to have higher levels of the substance than products sold in Britain.

Arsenic and its compound variants can be especially potent poisons.
