Younger generation responsible for ‘kale resurgence’

March 29th, 2008

The recent increased popularity of the green vegetable kale is because more young people are buying the product, new research has suggested.

A survey of 1.2 million shopping baskets by discoverkale.co.uk has revealed that young families are the most likely to purchase the green vegetable.

Despite its connotations with the older generation, it was found that 20 to 39-years old make up 13.9 per cent of the repurchases kale.

Fiona Hunter, a nutritionist, noted why the results are so surprising in today’s society.

“At a time when obesity and health continue to be key issues for discussion, it is good to see the younger generation taking note of the health message,” she remarked.

Ms Hunter added that kale provides vitamin C, folate and beta-carotene.

Consumers are becoming more aware of healthy food, the Food Standards Agency discovered earlier this week.

Nearly three-quarters of Brits now know they must eat five portions of fruit or vegetables a day, the findings revealed.
